It is commonly seen that diabetes results due to a combination of factors like family history, lack of exercise and improper eating habits. Also, diabetes can cause further complications in kidneys, heart, other cardiovascular organs and even eyes. But, diabetes can also result in a number of infections which mostly go unnoticed or even when noticed, nobody thinks of relating them with diabetes. The list of diabetes and infection could be individual, could be a combination of factors or could occur exclusively in diabetes patients. These infections can result in increased mortality and morbidity in diabetics. There are several infections which occur due to it and some of them are briefed in the following lines: The head and neck region is particularly famous for diabetes and infection. One particularly life threatening uncommon infection is invasive otitis media. It is usually seen in elder diabetes and is accompanied by symptoms like hearing loss, otorrhea and severe pain. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is another infection which occurs with signs like fever, general malaise, nasal stuffiness and ocular or facial pain. Any respiratory infection in diabetics is seen to result in mortality. These infections include influenza, legionella, streptococcus pneumonia, gram-negative infection and staphylococcus aureus are seen frequently in diabetes.
