How To Test For Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition where blood sugar level rises abnormally. Therefore, to test diabetes, test of blood glucose level is done. To test for diabetes, one has to fast for 8 to 10 hours randomly or after meal and then sample of the blood to be tested is collected. OGTT or Oral Glucose Tolerance Test is a series of glucose tests. First of all a sample of fasting glucose is collected and then the patient drinks a certain standard amount of glucose to check his glucose tolerance. After that, additional glucose tests are performed after specific intervals to keep track of blood glucose level. OGTT is an effective blood sugar test to diagnose diabetes or enhanced blood sugar level. OGTT or fasting glucose to diagnose diabetes is done twice after some time interval to confirm the diagnosis of diabetes. A transient hyperglycemia or diabetes may also occur during advance level of pregnancy. This type of diabetes is called gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes can also be checked by OGTT but it is another version of OGTT which is also called one hour glucose challenge.
