Metformin Side Effects
Metformin is a medicine which belongs to a drug group called sulfonylurea. Metaformin is used to treat type II diabetes and also for treating polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is an effective medicine for diabetic patients but the drug has several side effects which one may experience, when one consumes motorman.
Side effects of Metformin
Metformin or glucophage can be tolerated by many people but majority of others experience side effects like depression, headache, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, stomach disorders etc. The side effects caused by the drug are minor and hence do not require major treatment.
Remember, hair loss is not a common side effect of metformin. However, if one experience hair loss while taking this drug then one should consult the doctor and if hair loss persists then one should consider changing the drug altogether and should take different diabetic medication. It is found that the drug has adverse effect on our hair follicle as the result of which when one consumes it, hair begin to fall.
Metformin Side effects and Weight Loss
Commonly, people suffer from diarrhea (around 53%) and nausea (around 25.5%) when they use metformin but the drug is known to cause weight loss also. Studies have shown that people who are on metformin often lost 1.4 to 84 pounds on an average. Those who have type II diabetes and are taking metformin are likely to lose weight while other diabetic drugs cause weight gain.
Metformin is an oral medicine which lowers our blood glucose level. Metformin increases the sensitivity of muscle, liver and other tissues and therefore the level of sugar in the blood get reduced. It does not cause extreme hypoglycemia but it lowers blood glucose level as the result of which one may experience headache, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, nausea etc.
Metformin Side Effects in Men
Fatigue and muscular pain are some of the side effects of metformin. These side effects may be curbed by getting additional sleep at night or by taking mid day nap. Muscle discomfort may occur which can be corrected by taking ibuprofen but the doctor should be consulted first before taking this painkiller. One of the rare side effects of metformin in men is lactic acidosis which is very harmful.
Men who take metformin are likely to experience gastrointestinal discomfort. The symptoms of which may appear in the form of stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting etc. However, these symptoms disappear gradually over certain period of time. One should take proper care of it to avoid these symptoms. Metformin drug should be taken along with food and also consumption of fried and spicy food should be avoided. In case of vomiting one requires to consult a doctor.
Lactic acidosis is a deadly disease, although rare but it is one of the fatal side effects of meformin. Patients who suffer from lactic acidosis often complain of weakness, muscle pain, stomach disorder, nausea, vomiting, uneasiness etc. As this a fatal side effect of metformin, one needs to consult doctor immediately.
Hypoglycemia which is an uncommon metabolic side effect of metformin can be corrected by regular exercise and less calorie intake.
Around 30% of the patients who take metformin experience low absorption of Vitamin B12from the intestine. It is because metformin in some way or the other interferes with some intrinsic factor of our body which in turn leads to a reduced B12 absorption.
Metformin Side Effects and Depression
Metformin may also cause depression. Although depression is not a common side effect of metformin but most of the patients who take who take metformin complains of severe headache and depression sometimes.
