Symptoms of diabetic cats
The initial symptoms in diabetic cats are usually sudden weight loss with excessive thirst frequent urination and increased appetite. You need to do tests using keto/glucose strips or it can be done by using a glucometer at your home and if the tests shows ketones in urine then you should contact your vet soon.
In few cats cataract and retinal abnormalities can also occur which can lead to the loss of vision and blindness in extreme cases. They may also suffer from nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and coma.
Neuropathy is common in cats which is a syndrome of weak legs for which vitamins are prescribed .
Diabetic cats Treatment
For diabetic cats treatment can be done by a vet if it is diagnosed early as it becomes life threatening if not done on time. They are usually being given insulin and carb diet. Oral pills are less used in cats. When a cat is hospitalised for stabilisation of diabetes then a strict routine should be followed. A weight loss regime should be followed for cats who are overweight. Dose of insulin should not be changed without consulting the concerned vet.
Diet for diabetic cats
A low carbohydrate diet is good for diabetic cats as it lowers the requirement for insulin. The canned food prescribed by vets are effective for them.
