Diabetes complications – Gum problems, liver and eye diseases

Going through the stats that diabetes eye disease is one of the common causes of blindness in people younger than 65 years of age in US won’t make you feel good.  But this is true.

If you are diabetic then it is better to go for an eye examination every 3 months with your ophthalmologist to avoid eye problems and do keep your sugar level under control. High sugar level can lead to blurred vision. My dad happens to be a diabetic and I never see him missing any single appointment with his ophthalmologist every 3 months. Blurred vision can lead to serious diabetes eye disease like cataract, glaucoma and retinopathy.

Cataract is defined as the fogging of the clear lens of the eye where you are unable to focus on light and you get blurred vision and treatment is done by surgery and lens implant.

Glaucoma occurs when the fluid inside the eye does not drain properly from a buildup of pressure inside the eye which damages the blood vessels and leads to loss of vision. Treatment of glaucoma is usually laser surgery or use of eye drops however it can be prevented by getting annual screening of glaucoma done by your doctor.

Diabetic retinopathy is caused by changes in blood vessels of retina. The longer you have diabetes the more risk to get diabetes retinopathy. You need to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Treatment of diabetic retinopathy is usually done through laser surgery.

Diabetes and gum problems are associated with each other as diabetic people are more prone to infections and gum disease is considered to be sixth complication for those people who don’t have their sugar level under control. If your sugar level is not under control you can even loose your teeth. Do follow proper oral regime and consult your dentist twice every year.

Liver disease diabetes is one of the silent killers among diabetic people as it causes more deaths in Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes liver disease includes nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver and hepatocellular carcinoma. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease happens when blood sugar goes out of control.

Hepatocellar Carcinoma is a type of liver cancer associated with diabetes. It is being said that exercise and weight loss can alleviate nonalcoholic fatty liver disease but thiazolidinediones, metformin and 3-hydroxy-3-methyhlglutaryl coenzyme A inhibitors are used as possible treatments.
