Women (expecting or trying) should consult with their physicians if they are at a diabetic risk due to family history, defects in their earlier pregnancy and over-weightiness. It can cause many defects in the child like jaundice, birth defects (trauma or large baby), stillbirth or even death. These complications could be avoided by effective management of gestational diabetes.

The main objective of management is to prevent gestational diabetes complications in the newborn and his/her mother. Researchers have stated that controlling the glucose levels can help in preventing the diabetic problems and increasing the quality of the maternal period. Women with diabetic risks (due to obesity or family history) should always counsel before trying to get pregnant.

Also, diet changes should be done to avoid peaking of the blood glucose levels. Drastic changes in diet should be avoided as sufficient energy for both mother and child is needed in the pregnancy period. The diet should contain at least 2000 to 2500 kcal of energy.

Also, regular exercise is advised (of moderate intensity) for expecting mothers. This keeps the glucose levels in check and also helps in good blood circulation to keep the body and child healthy. Treatment with insulin shots could be necessary if there are evidences of complications or ineffective management of the glucose levels.

But very low glucose levels due to excessive insulin should also be avoided. There are alternatives to the insulin shots like glyburide and metformin. Some women need insulin in addition to metformin, but using metformin leads to low weight gain.

After the pregnancy is over, glucose tests should be carried out for 3-5 months to make sure that diabetes has been effectively countered and also, the woman and the child should take measures to avoid type 2 diabetes mellitus.
