I just happened to visit one my uncles few days back, who is a diabetic from 10 years. Was amazed looking at his lifestyle, decided to share it with all of you…
His day starts with a walk to his farm is about 1 km away. Then he comes home after having a bath we sat for a breakfast, all of us were having around 10 idlies, (god they were so yummy) he settled for only 5, I asked why? He told he’ll have it another round at 11.
At around 10 Am I was having a walk around my house I saw some kids (his grandchildren) sneaking into his room, just went in without their knowledge chocolates in all of his pants!! Wow!!! What a way to combat low glucose.
After having snacks at 11, he said he forgot something just followed him at found that he was looking at his feet he said he had been experiencing numbness in his feet so he has been told to look at his feet in the mirror daily
After having lunch we had a small nap.
When I woke up he compiling some papers he asked me to freshen up and come.
I discovered they were his investigation reports. What struck me was the amazing regularity he used to get them done. He is such a busy person, always moving around for farm related work. Sugar levels were well within control. He also got glycosylated Hb (known as Hb A1c) every 3 months. This is a standard test now as declared by American diabetes association.
He used to get a complete check up once a year. For long term complications of diabetes. Included examination of feet, eyes, renal functions (kidney), blood pressure, ECG,
Just when I thought he was all perfect, aunty told he often goes out with slippers he already a little numbness in his legs. He got nice scolding from me for that. He can develop ulcer which can very difficult to treat.
Highlights
1. have a brisk walk daily
2. have 5 small meals instead of 3 big ones
3. have few chocolates in pocket ( in case the sugar level goes too low)
4. have a mirror to check your feet( more imp if u started developing numbness)
5. have your sugar checked regularly (once a week is best)
6. have Hb A1c done every 3 months
7. have a follow up every year

I like the way you have written. I hope other diabetic patients also follow the above mentioned routine.Keep up the good work.
Chocolate is not the best treatment for a low blood glucose; need soft candy pure sugar that is without fat, fat blocks the immediate absorption of sugar….jelly beans, life savers, etc. juice (4 0z) much better choice.
