Many researches and development programs are done, so that new methods could be found which can help in preventing and curing diabetes. These include medications, devices (glucometers) and injections (insulin). Many of these devices are explained below:
1. Blood glucose meters: the glucose checking meters or glucometers require a small amount of blood to be put on the check strips (about few microliters). The blood can be drawn from palms, upper-arms, forearms, fingertips, calves or thighs. Many meters can save multiple readings which can help in keeping records for different days.
2. Insulin pens: many insulin pens are disposable and are colour coded which can help in identifying different doses or the strength or the amount of insulin present in the pens. Insulin shots should be taken during mealtimes and unopened pens should be kept in refrigerators. Different pens can be kept unopened for several days and weeks.
3. Pen lancets and needles: these devices are used to attach pen needles to the insulin pens. These come in different sizes and show compatibility with all brands of insulin pens. Needles can be attached to the pen faster and many facets come with audible click features which can help the visually impaired.
4. Home tests: through home tests, people can measure their haemoglobin or glucose levels at home. These tests contain multiple tests which complete a user’s yearly goals for blood glucose levels.
5. Continuous glucose meters: these meters constitute of a sensor, transmitter and a receiver. The sensor is inserted under the skin and can measure the glucose level for 7 days. The receiver can record up to 30 days of information.
6. Hypoglycaemia treatment drugs: these drugs are used to quickly raise the blood glucose levels.
7. Pain management: these devices can help in alleviating the pain one experiences after insulin injections.
8. Insulin pump: these pumps can store large amount of insulin and also record the amount of dosages that the user has to take.
9. Drugs: these drugs can help in treating different forms of diabetes or after effects of insulin.
10. Drug labelling changes: these drugs can help in increasing, decreasing or maintaining the blood glucose levels.
