We all know that human body is made of numerous cells and it requires fuel to remain active. The hormone called insulin allows glucose to enter the cell and provide fuel.
Diabetes may be termed as the condition of the body when enough insulin is not produced or the insulin that is produced can not function properly. When glucose produced can not enter the cell, is deposited in the blood causing diabetes.Diabetes during pregnancy period of women is termed as gestational diabetes. It is defined as a condition in pregnant women when blood sugar level is elevated with all diabetic symptoms. In this case the woman is not previously being diagnosed with diabetes. But all those diabetic symptoms disappear after the baby is born.
There is an increasing risk of the mother getting diabetes in future if she is obese. There is also possibility of baby to be obese. In case of gestational diabetes the problem does not arises due to lack of insulin but due to insulin cant convert glucose to fuel for the cells. It happen due to blocking effect of other hormones . This is termed as insulin resistance.
Causes of gestational diabetes
Generally cause of the gestational diabetes is not yet known. But there are several theories to why this condition occur. Placenta produces a large amount of hormone and water while supplying nutrients to growing fetus. Those hormone and water might have a blocking effect of insulin.
This condition arises between 20 to 24 weeks of pregnancy. As the placenta grows there is more production of hormone causing more blockages of insulin but pancreas produces insulin to overcome this process. When insulin production is less gestational diabetes occur.
