Here is a exercise guide for the younger and older people with diabetes and precautions to be taken by them.
Regular exercise is a must for every person who is either ailing or is at a risk of developing diabetes. There are different forms of exercises which can be practiced by both the elderly and the young diabetics. These forms include:
- Aerobic exercises: these exercises include continuous and rhythmic movement of the same groups of muscles for few minutes. Different aerobics exercise includes jogging, walking, bicycling and water aerobics (swimming). Many different sports can also be practiced.
- Resistance exercise: these exercises require muscular strength to work against loads or move weights. Examples include working with weights and weight machines.
- Flexibility exercises: these exercises are done to maintain or increase the range of motion of the joints of the body. The examples of this type include mostly stretching exercises.
These exercises increase the ability of the body to supply more oxygen and lower the blood glucose levels. These exercises should be done at sufficient frequency and intensity as working with higher intensity can harm the body or even lead to dehydration or even hypoglycaemia. Hypoglycaemia can be caused due to abnormal lowering of the blood glucose levels.
The diabetics who exercise should take precautions before starting any new or continuing the old exercises. Exercises of high intensity should be avoided as this can lead to body pain or dehydration. Dehydration can cause depletion of body fluids which cause low mobility of the glucose in the blood stream.
