Cataract versus diabetes : Complications and Treatment

Do you know, about 15 % cataract surgeries are done on diabetes patients….
And those 10.5% patients who have their first operations for cataract are diabetic….
And also, 28% patients are diagnosed as diabetic due to cataract….

The above explain how diabetes has become a pathway for one of its complications, cataract to be exhibited early.
True diabetic cataract is rare, and often occurs in young patients with uncontrolled diabetes.
The chances of occurrence of cataract, of senile type is more and early in patients with diabetes than with non- diabetics.
And to the surprise of many, most of the diabetic cases are discovered during routine examinations on patients how come for extraction of cataract.
What is cataract?
To visualize any object, light rays pass into eyes through cornea and then through the transparent lens. Then the light rays strike the retina and images are thus perceived by the brain.
As one becomes old, the opacity of lens gets reduced with the result of formation of opacities and so the person has a decreased visibility of what he sees.
Lens of diabetics contain more sorbitol, fructose, and glucose than non- diabetics, which are said to be harmful for the lens to become cataractous.
Such a process increases in rate in a diabetic and so the exhibition of the symptoms.
Treatment:
Glasses are prescribed in the beginning with control of diabetes.
The treatment of cataract in a diabetic or a non-diabetic patient is the same.
Extracellular cataract extraction is done with a IOL (intra ocular lens) placement in posterior capsule, or a Phacoemulsion is done.
But diabetes becomes a problem; in surgeries done for cataract it causes posterior capsular opacity. Which again requires treatment called Nd YAG- Lazar.
So if you are a diabetic, mind you, you are at risk of developing cataract!!!!!
